Buying and planning decor for your wedding can be one of the funnest parts of wedding planning. But there are so many elements you have to think through, it can be overwhelming at times. Today I’m breaking down, table by table, exactly how to plan the decor for your wedding so it looks gorgeous but doesn’t break the bank.
First Things First
Before we start planning decor table by table, you need to choose colors and an overall vibe you’re going with. Whether you’re opting for a modern beach wedding or rustic and romantic, choose a focus. I also suggest pinning a few inspiration images so you always have clear vision to reference.
For your ceremony, keep decor to a minimum. You don’t want to distract from the reason you’re all actually there, the marriage. For your ceremony, you’ll want to plan for an aisle runner, aisle markers, reserved signs and your altar. Depending upon your setting, this could be two arrangements on pedestals, flowers draped on an arbor or even a vintage mantle adorned with candles.
If you’re doing programs, I suggest putting them on each guests seat so they’re sure to see them.
I suggest combining your guest book and gift table. It makes it much simpler for your guests and makes the room look less crowded. For this table, you’ll need to plan for your guest book, pens and a box or crate to hold cards. This is also a good place for a small floral arrangement, a picture of the two of you and maybe a sign.
Keep guest tables simple with a centerpiece (either flowers, candles or both) and a table number if doing a seating chart. If you want to add a layer of extra style, I love a good table runner or topper for pattern and color. If you’re doing a plated dinner, place a charger, silverware, napkin and glass at each seat as well. You won’t put your plates on the table because your caterer will need them in the back for the food. A menu card, sprig of herbs or place card make a nice addition on top of the napkin.
Your cake table will have minimal decor as you want your cake to take center stage. All you need here is your cake stand, cutting set, and topper. If you purchased speciality plates or forks (you know, like those cute Mr. and Mrs. ones from BHLDN) those will go here as well. The cake table is also a good place to add a little pizazz with a specialty linen or table topper.
Your bar will have the least decor of all. A flower arrangement is really all you need to jazz it up. You can add a bar sign with what’s being served, but in all honesty by the time guests get up there, they can already see what you have. A sign is a good idea if you’re having signature cocktails though.
Tips from a Planner
It’s easy to go overboard with decor for your wedding buying everything you see that has a quote about love or says “Mr. and Mrs.” on it. But try to hold back. You don’t want to go overboard. Having too many signs or nick nacks doesn’t add to your day, it just distracts.
